Brewster Brothers
John and Rick Brewster (along with Doc Neeson) were the nucleus and major songwriters of the legendary Angels, one of Australia's most successful bands. The guys played rhythm and lead guitar and produced the band's classic multi-platinum albums. After three decades, The Angels remain one of this country's most loved and respected outfits. John and Rick continue to perform with them today. In 1998, The Angels were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame by their peers.
A few years ago John and Rick started thinking about a break-away project. They were looking to develop new material shaped by their experiences; both as teenagers growing up in Adelaide, and all those years together in and out of the spotlight riding the highs and lows with one of Australia's most famous bands.
Out of the blue, Rick received a call from his old friend Etha Graham. As a result, he spent 6 weeks on a ranch in the Arizona desert immersed in composing the music for a deeply personal album of Etha's lyrics. So impressed was Rick with Etha's style that on his return to Sydney, he suggested to John that they approach Etha about a song-writing collaboration. It was a collaboration that would help give birth to the hauntingly biographical landscape of 'Shadows Fall'. They'd been searching for an elusive style that would reflect and embody Rick's early classical piano playing and John's young teenage years holed up in his bedroom engrossed with The Beatles, Dylan, The Band, to name just a few.
The first recorded sign of what they were up to emerged in 2003 with the release of a limited edition four-track CD 'Any Day', recorded live at Balmain's 'Unity Hall Hotel'.
It showed the Brothers in a state of transition, with covers from Dylan and Ry Cooder, plus two very strong originals that gave an indication of their new direction.
